Initial Response To Punchdrunk and Initial Discussion as a Group
My initial response to Punchdrunk is an incredibly positive one. This is something that I am really excited to develop and take forward, I absolutely love the idea of creating a fragmented story in which the audience has to put together and deduce. I was also really interested in the fact that you can mix different theatre styles together, using elements with a more naturalistic focus and others with a more symbolic and physical quality to them. I also loved the staging in the pieces, the different rooms were something which really interested me with the different meanings that they held in relation to the scene taking place within them and the lack of limitations that there is while decorating these rooms.
Our initial discussions as a group brought together some very interesting ideas. We came up with the idea of having each character from a different time period in history, this highlights that this situation is something that has been prevalent for many decades and generations. We also wanted to explore the inner and private emotions of each character when they are on their own, we felt that this would allow us to develop the characters and to give them more emotional depth than is shown in the traditional naturalistic style that 'A Doll's House' is typically performed in. We also discussed using the contemporary dance element more sparingly in the piece instead of making it the centre point of it.
