Response to "Punchdrunk Behind The Scenes" Questions
What was insightful about the video?
Firstly I found it incredibly interesting to see the amount of planning that goes into creating a Punchdrunk show, the amount of detail that Felix and the other creators go to in order to create a performance in which every character has a path around the building and how these all interlock with each other like a machine to create the entire show.
I also love the whole creative process, how much of the material within the shows is created by the performers themselves. I also like how they often create the finale first and then think about how they can create works that build up to this final number.
I really like how Punchdrunk takes classical texts and pieces of literature and adapts them, adding a modern twist to them making them an entirely new piece.
The way in which they use many of the set pieces in their dances and movements is something that I find very interesting, I also love how much of the choreography seems almost effortless like it is almost second nature to the performers.
What ideas have inspired you to include in your work?
I really like the idea of using the "state of tension" and applying that to our characters. I feel like this will definitely help us to develop our characters to fit the punchdrunk style of our piece and will also help us to further develop our scenes as a whole to fit this style.
I would love to include movements and choreography that requires us to use the set pieces, utilising them to create different levels on the set, we could possibly use this as something symbolic within the piece.
What are you concerned about with including in your Punchdrunk performance?
One of the things I am a little concerned with is creating a set that properly fits the style of Punchdrunk. I think it may be difficult to really encapsulate the feeling and tone of the piece that we hope to create due to the lack of time to collate set pieces in order to bring the setting to life and go for the often symbolic feeling that many of the Punchdrunk sets go for.
I am also concerned about using music in our piece. Due to how connected the rooms are, much of the music will overlap in the different spaces, as a result we will have to choose music to work for all the scenes that are going on at that point.
